Overview of the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa, Subclass 482, program is designed to help Australian businesses address genuine skill shortages by allowing them to hire skilled workers from overseas when they cannot find suitable candidates within Australia.

The TSS Visa is divided into three streams:

  • Short-Term Stream – Valid for up to two years
  • Medium-Term Stream – Valid for up to four years
  • Labour Agreement Stream

Holders of a TSS visa are entitled to:

  • Live and work in Australia for a period of up to four years
  • Pursue studies in Australia
  • Include immediate family members on their 482 visa
  • Potentially transition to permanent residency if eligible

General Eligibility for the 482 Visa

To qualify for the TSS Visa, you need an Australian employer willing to sponsor you, along with meeting certain requirements:

Occupation

Applicants must be qualified or have sufficient experience in a role listed on one of the relevant skilled occupation lists for the 482 Visa:

  • Short-Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL)
  • Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Regional Occupation List (ROL)

Sponsor

You must be nominated by a Standard Business Sponsor or a business that has applied for such sponsorship. Your employer is also required to submit a nomination application on your behalf.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of one years of work experience in their nominated occupation or a related role. This experience should have been gained within the past five years before applying. While part-time work may be considered, casual work will not be accepted.

Depending on your nominated occupation and country of origin, you may need to undergo a skill assessment before applying for the TSS visa. Some assessing authorities require more than two years of experience to complete this assessment.

Skill Assessment

Certain primary TSS visa applicants are required to complete a mandatory skills assessment to qualify for this visa.

Age

There is no age limit for applying for the TSS (Subclass 482) Visa.

Health Insurance

Holders of the 482 Temporary Visa must maintain adequate health insurance while residing in Australia. Some countries have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Australia, potentially exempting applicants from these countries from needing separate health insurance.

Relocate to Australia with the Temporary Skill Shortage TSS Visa

For those looking to move to Australia for work and to establish a new life for their family, obtaining the right visa is a critical step in the process. Unfortunately, it is often seen as one of the most challenging, confusing, and stressful parts of the relocation journey. However, if you’re in the process of applying for a 482 Visa or any other visa to move to Australia, rest assured that the process doesn’t have to be as complicated as it might initially seem. With the support of a registered migration agent or a lawyer specialising in Immigration law, you can maximize your chances of having your application approved with minimal hassle and cost.

Once you receive your Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage Visa, you’ll be able to live and work in Australia temporarily, using your skills to address gaps in the local labor market. Depending on the stream, you can stay in Australia for either two or four years. After this period, you may have the option to renew your Employer Sponsored Visa 482 or apply for permanent residency. After living legally in Australia for four years as a permanent resident, you may become eligible to apply for citizenship.
